APW News: Minutes

Minutes of the APW meeting October 5, 2002
By Carol Sanders Reiner, APW Secretary

Business meeting:

Arkansas Press Women met briefly at 4:10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Cedar/Redbud Room at the Inn of the Ozarks, Eureka Springs, Ark., with 13 members present. President Jennifer M. Fulford presided.

She reported that Terry Hawkins reported that APW has a total of $21,489.35 in one checking account and two Certificates of Deposits. Fulford reported that because of the silent auction, coordinated by Leigh Ann Braswell, APW would make about $300 on the Fall Conference. She also reported that APW made a little less than $300 on the Silent Auction, also coordinated by Leigh Braswell, at the last conference in Fayetteville.

Audrey Lott Watkins, first vice president, was unable to attend the conference because of the death of her mother's brother.

Fulford reported that Malea Hargett and Emily Burgin Roberts have volunteered St. John's Catholic Center as the location for the Spring Awards Luncheon; however, members should not expect Hargett and Roberts to handle all arrangements. Membership voted by acclamation to hold the Awards Luncheon at St. John's Catholic Center. Trina Holman volunteered to locate and handle dealings with a caterer. Fulford will be requesting members to help with other tasks.

Communications Contest -- Fulford announced that she regretted that she forgot to bring with her the list of all the tasks associated with the contest compiled by Elizabeth Childs at her request. She said that she would be emailing the list of duties to folks so that they can volunteer for a job associated with the contest. But, she emphasized, one person does need to serve as contest director. Reiner said that she and Childs would handle the Power Point presentation of winners (provided someone provides the winning entries to them in .jpg format) and the certificates.

Also, to avoid missing members who may have just joined prior to the contest deadline, it was decided to ask National for an updated membership list just prior to sending out contest materials (coming out in the next Newsletter). This was a problem noted in the spring by Emily Roberts.

Several members requested the list of Arkansas members recently received from National in September at Bismark, ND, which Reiner picked up there. Fulford said she would mail it to the interested parties.

Reiner announced that Pearl Serbus was first runner-up in the NFPW Communicator of Achievement.

Michelle Parks, high school contest director, thanked Judy Howard for her help with contest materials. When asked, Parks said she could continue a second year as coordinator but would like to have help. Fulford said she would assist in finding her the help. Fulford also thanked Judy Howard for preparation of conference materials -- the brochure, stationery and program.

Claudia Ahrens led a round of applause for conference planners, saying that the conference was superb. Everyone agreed.

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Carol Sanders Reiner
Secretary
