APW News: Minutes
Board of Directors: The Arkansas Press Women Board of Directors met Saturday, June 29, 10:15 a.m., at St. Johns Catholic Center, Little Rock with President Jennifer M. Fulford presiding. Among those present were Claudia Ahrens, Brenda Blagg, Elizabeth Childs, Terry Hawkins, Trina Holman, Judy Howard, Debbie Miller, Michelle Parks, Helen Plotkin, Carol Sanders Reiner, Emily Burgin Roberts, Pearl Serbus, Audrey Lott Watkins and Anne Winchester. AUDIT -- First on the agenda was the topic of an audit. Hawkins said that he could help with an audit but not until August. Apparently, an audit hasnt been done since Blanche Murray stepped down as treasurer. Hawkins said the he would prevail upon Eva Marie Pearson, his office manager and an accountant to conduct the audit, probably for free. Since the topic was money, Hawkins was asked to present his report. He submitted the attached treasurers report and commended that years of low interest rates are hurting Arkansas Press Women. The report showed that APW has a total of $23,569.98 in all accounts including CDs. NOMINATING COMMITTEE -- Fulford announced that two positions second vice president and historian needed to be filled so she appointed a nominating committee consisting of Audrey Lott Watkins, Brenda Blagg and Helen Plotkin. DOMAIN NAME RENEWAL -- Emily Roberts said that it was time to renew APWs domain site name. She recommended $70 for 3 years rate. Roberts reported that the web site gets 5 -10 hits a week. Hawkins moved to renew APW domain site name for $70; seconded by Blagg; motion carried. CONTEST REPORT Childs reported that the Communications Contest needs to continue as a committee project with a coordinator. She said that contest activities have grown tremendously. She was asked to break down contest duties by tasks, prepare a timeline and indicate the amount of time required to perform respected tasks. FALL CONFERENCE Discussion ended in agreement that the Awards Luncheon should continue in central Arkansas and that the fall conference rotate to different parts of the state. DeGray Lake was mentioned as a possible site as was Eureka Springs. Fulford said that she thought that the members in the Eureka Springs area might be amenable to hosting the conference. DELEGATES Fulford announced that she would not be attending the national conference this year as it was too near her delivery date. In light of the shortage of delegates, she suggested that all those attending be named delegates. Those in attendance who are planning to attend include Reiner, Pearson and Serbus so a few delegate slots are open. HOSTING CONFERENCE Hosting the NFPW national conference was discussed. The consensus was that Arkansas should concentrate on boosting membership first and then consider hosting a conference after the Heifer Global Village and the Clinton Presidential Library are open. The board meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m. General Membership: Arkansas Press Women (APW) met briefly June 29, 2002, at 12:45 p.m. during the Arkansas Press Womens Awards Luncheon at the St. Johns Catholic Center, Little Rock. President Jennifer Fulford announced that the board had appointed a nominating committee consisting of Audrey Watkins, Brenda Blagg and Helen Plotkin to fill two APW vacancies second vice president and historian. The committee met earlier and presented the following recommendations second vice president, Trina Holman; and historian, Claudia Ahrens. Emily Roberts moved they be elected, seconded from the floor, motion carried Also, Fulford asked who was planning to attend the NFPW national meeting in Bismarck. Those indicating that they would be attending Pearl Serbus, Carol Sanders Reiner and Eva Marie Pearson were elected delegates. Also, anyone else attending would be designated a delegate until APWs quota is met. In Scholarship Chairman Tina Pauls absence, Fulford announced that the APW scholarship would be awarded to Karen Sines, a mass communications graduate student at Ouachita Baptist University, She has worked for the Killeen (Texas) Daily Herald and also teaches high school journalism. Having taken care of other business at the board meeting earlier that day which was attended by many members, the session adjourned so that the awards presentations could begin.
