APW News: Minutes
Arkansas Press Women met Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum in Pine Bluff with Helen Plotkin presiding. The minutes were approved as submitted. Emily Roberts moved that the attached treasurers report be accepted as submitted. Seconded by Leeanna Walker, Motion carried. APWs membership stands at 64 thus entitling APW to 6 delegates to the NFPW conference. Brenda Blagg moved that Ouida Cox, Carol Sanders Reiner and Sharon Knight be elected delegates, Seconded by Knight. Since only three members are now planning to attend the national conference, Blagg moved that any member attending the conference be designated a delegate. Seconded by Knight. The board recommendation that APW $250 to Arkansas Press Associations On to Victory fund drive to raise money to renovate and expand APAs new building, which includes space for APWs historical records did NOT pass. Instead, Eva Marie Pearson moved that APW pledge $1,000 to APAs On to Victory fund drive to be paid within four years. Seconded by Claudia Ahrens, Motion passed. The boards recommendation that APW donate $50 toward the purchase of a retirement gift for Vivien Sadowski, the outgoing NFPW president, passed. The board recommendation that since APW did not select a Communicator of Achievement for this year, APW allocate the $500 set aside to help pay the CofAs expenses to attend the national meeting go to the incoming president to help defray the cost of her attending the national convention and take part in the leadership training offered there passed. The board recommendation that entry fees in the APW Communications Contest be raised to $4 per entry beginning with the 2001 contest passed. The board recommendation that a plaque be purchased honoring sweepstakes winners in the annual Communications Contest passed with the notation that it go as far back as possible. An item should be put in the Communicator asking former sweepstakes winners to come forward to insure that their names are included on the plaque. NEW BUSINESS Eva Marie Pearson reminded the membership that APWs turn to host the NFPW national convention would be coming round soon. She suggested perhaps 2008, and cautioned members that doing so was not an easy task. President Plotkin presented gifts to Pearson, Debbie Miller and Leeanna Walker. New officers Jennifer M. Fulford, president; Audrey Lott Watkins, vice president; Carol Sanders Reiner, secretary; and Terry Hawkins, treasurer; district directors, Eva Marie Pearson, at large; Claudie Ahrens, SE; Jan Ziegler, NE, Emily Roberts, central; and Brenda Blagg, NW were installed. New President Fulford announced that the fall professional improvement conference would be in northwest Arkansas probably the weekend of October 19-20 (the same weekend as War Eagle Craft Fair) assuming lodging could be found. Respectfully submitted, For the Record Alison Hayhoe, a Canadian journalism major at John Brown University, received APW's scholarship. She is a senior and is currently an intern at the Benton county Daily Record. APW has one national high school contest winner. Ashley Gibson, from Southside High School, Ft. Smith, placed second in reviews. The APW sweepstakes winner is Michelle Parks, a new APW member. |
