High School Journalism ContestThe Arkansas Press Women High
School Journalism Contest is held each year to
encourage young people to develop writing skills and to
consider a Rules and entry forms are distributed in the fall, in preparation for an early spring entry deadline. The entry form is available here, and in higher-quality PDF format from the Arkansas High School Press Association (AHSPA) or from the APW High School Contest Director. Winners in the contest are announced at the AHSPA convention in the spring. First-place winners and their advisers were also invited to attend the APW awards luncheon as our guests. The processDuring the fall semester, school sponsors begin consulting with students to select their best works from over the contest year. Entries must be the work of students enrolled in grades 9-12 during the current contest year or during the last semester of the senior year for students' work published in the spring. The contest year runs from the deadline date of last year's contest to the deadline date of this year's contest (February through February). Each student may enter as many categories as he/she chooses, but no more than three entries in any category. Categories are editorials, opinion, news, features, sports, columns, feature photos, sports photos, cartooning, reviews, graphics and single-page layout (click for details). Work entered may have been published in their high school publications, or in other outlets. Entries are mailed to the contest director, who recruits individual journalists, newspaper staffs or college journalism department faculty to serve as judges. We have generally been fortunate to have willing and worthy participants who consider the students as possible future journalists or who simply wish to encourage good writing and communication. The winnersAll state contest winners are invited to attend the AHSPA spring convention to receive APW certificates for their awards. First-place winners and their sponsors are also invited to join Arkansas Press Women at their annual awards banquet held in late spring. Winning entries from state judging are entered in the National Federation of Press Women Education Fund annual high school contest. National judges return the entries with their own choices of first, second, third or honorable mention awards. APW allocates $250 each year to help pay travel expenses of national winners who attend the national conference to receive their award.
