Communications Contest

By Debbie Miller, APW member since 1986

Arkansas Press Women conducts an annual communications contest to recognize outstanding professional achievement in a wide array of communication fields. Those fields include writing, editing, design, Web communications, radio and television broadcasting, public relations, advertising, journalism research and scholarship, and book writing.

The 2007 contest drew entries from all over the state. Winners will be announced June 9 at the annual awards luncheon in Little Rock.

Entrants must be members in good standing of Arkansas Press Women and the national organization, National Federation of Press Women. Student members and retired members are eligible to participate in the contest. New members may join at the same time as submitting entries to the state contest.

Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and prepared in accordance with the rules set by NFPW. Cost for the 2007 Arkansas Press Women contest was $4 per entry.

Entries awarded first place in the state contest are eligible for submission to the NFPW national contest. Contestants incur an additional national entry fee to have their state winners submitted to the national contest.

The APW contest deadline is shortly after the first of the year and the contest period is for the preceding calendar year. Judging is completed by late February and state winners are announced at an awards luncheon in May or June. National winners are announced at the NFPW convention in September.

Contest rules are the same as those followed for the national contest, with one exception: the state affiliate will allow up to three entries per person per category or subcategory. Please read and follow the rules carefully, and contact the contest directors if you have questions.
