Freedom of Information

By Brenda Blagg, APW member since 1972

Arkansas Press Women take an active role in defending the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act and promoting citizen access to government records and meetings.

APW joins the Arkansas governor, attorney general and other media organizations in co-sponsoring publication of the Arkansas FOI Handbook, a guide to the state law. Updated as the state FOI Act changes, the book is made available to the public and to government officials.

APW also helped found and continues to participate in the Arkansas FOI Coalition, a collection of media representatives and individuals interested in protecting the public's right to know in Arkansas. The coalition regularly monitors proposed changes in the state's FOI Act and, as needed, sends representatives to testify before legislative committees on FOI matters and issues FOI Alerts to a network of interested professionals, including APW members.

For more information on Arkansas' Freedom of Information Act, see foiarkansas.com. For the most recent version of the Arkansas Freedom of Information Handbook, download this PDF from the Arkansas Press Association.
